Women's Health Cases — Breast Mesh, Paragard IUD & J&J Talc Baby Powder

Many products designed or targeted towards women can lead to significant harm or even death. Whether by faulty design or a company not properly understanding the science, tens of thousands of women in America are injured.

In some situations, a company may even be aware of the dangers — but places profits over people. For instance, Johnson & Johnson, the makers of baby powder and Shower to Shower products, deliberately hid the dangers of talc for decades. Their studies indicated the risk of ovarian cancer, yet they failed to warn users. Women who trusted Johnson & Johnson oftentimes became victims. And now, J&J is attempting to avoid all responsibility for the horrible suffering they have caused.

In 2015, the FDA sent a letter to Allergan (read the text here), the makers of SERI Surgical Scaffold, warning the company they were marketing their product for use in a way that was not approved. The letter noted that Allergan's claims that the mesh they manufacture could be used for various types of breast surgeries constituted "major changes or modifications" to the mesh's intended use — which were not permitted. The company touts its product as being strong and effective as a base for the body to regenerate tissue. However, when the product is used in manners not approved by the FDA, many women face life-threatening infections, such as "red breast."

Another example of a women's medical device harming the patients is Paragard's IUD. The small, "T-shaped" IUD (intrauterine device) is reported to be more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Paragard uses copper, instead of hormones, and provides continuous pregnancy prevention for as little or long as you want, up to 10 years. However, when women seek to have the device removed, it may break apart, resulting in numerous complications and pain.
